LIMITS DANCE COMPANY

Limits Dance Company began in June 2011, directed by Liam Gordon and co-directed by Tara Pender.

They created a dance company whose mission was to bring Ballroom and Latin American Dance out of the strictness of competitive dance and dust off the preconceptions it has in the dance world. Viewing these styles of dance in a new and innovated way, juxtaposing and fusing the styles together and help make this a worthwhile addition to any dancer's repertoire of movement.

Throughout 2011/12, the company has been connected with Edge Hill University and MDI. The student led company grew in numbers, created a diverse range of dance pieces, performed in numerous festivals and events and taught other students from across the faculties of Edge Hill University the joy of dance.

Using the fusion of classical ballroom and latin, with modern aspects of dance, Limits Dance created numerous commercial pieces performed at many social events, dance festivals and award evenings to help develop the professional working company we are today.

COMMERCIAL PERFORMANCE REPERTOIRE

'Just a short note to thank you and the Limits Dance Group for your performance at the Careers Awards Evening on Tuesday. Your performance was excellent and just the kind of thing we had in mind - providing a classy high energy start to the ceremony. Feedback from our guests and invited speakers indicated that they had very much enjoyed it and they were full of praise for how well you managed in such a restricted space.

Please do convey our appreciation to the rest of the company. We wish you well in your future plans'.

Smiling With a Loaded Gun//

2012 begins with a BANG as Limits Dance Company return with their most upbeat, fast paced piece yet. 'Smiling With a Loaded Gun' takes us back to the 1920s in New York City and draws inspiration from the gangster scene of the Jazz Age.

The dance combines the social dances Charleston, Jitterbug and Lindy Hop with the Quickstep and the Jive. This comic piece is also the first dance to welcome 8 new dancers to the company to make this a full packed piece.

It was first publicly performed at The Spring Charity Variety Show to raise money for The Roy Castle Lung Cancer Foundation, at Ormskirk Civic Hall on February 29th.

It was a great opportunity to publicly show the new piece along with our new line up of company members. We got a great response from the audience and a huge welcoming back for Limits. We came and showed a whole new side to the company as well, with a piece that wasn’t classical or serious, but a light hearted, upbeat comedy dance which got a lot of people tapping, laughing and clapping throughout it.

Thank you all so much for coming along to the show to raise money for such a great cause and thank you to all our Limits Dance Company fans for coming along and supporting us and giving us such an amazing response!

When Waltzers Collide//

Limits Dance Company in collaboration with Debbie Milner and Edge FWD presents their performance of 'When Waltzers Collide' a fun and comic piece based on the concept of classical Ballroom dancers coming head to head with contemporary All Male dancers in one single Viennese Waltz.

The piece was created by collaborating Limits Dance Company's dances 'They Will Never Tear Us Apart' & 'Red Eyes' and deconstructing sections of it to incorporate the quirky and caricatured dance theatre styles of the Edge FWD boys.

The dance was performed at The Black and White Christmas Ball in Edge Hill University for the staff and members of Edge Hill University on the 10th December. The piece was then again used as the opening act for The Edge Hill Winter Showcase in the performing Arts Building at The University on the 14th December.

It was a great opportunity for Limits to work alongside a well-known dance company such as Edge FWD and to work in such a successful way with Debbie Milner to create a piece which was fun and uplifting for the audiences and brings dance back to being a great form of entertainment for the masses. Having the classical styles of a Viennese Waltz deconstructed and pieced together with the contemporary styles of Edge FWD is what Limits strives to achieve; bringing a new lease of life to the classical styles of Ballroom dance.

'A huge thank you to everyone involved in the Black and White Ball and The Winter Showcase, The Edge FWD boys for their amazing commitment and talent, Limits Dance Company for their professionalism and dedication to the project and Debbie Milner for making it a great piece and wonderful choreographer to collaborate with'. - Liam Gordon

On November 4th, 2012 Liam Gordon and Emily Cartmell returned back to ballroom with the original core routine 'They Will Never Tear Us Apart', a contemporary show style of a Viennese Waltz to the INXS song 'Never Tear Us Apart'. The dance was performed as the professional dance during the Roy Castle Foundation charity event 'Strictly Ballroom 2012'.

Red Eyes//

Limits Dance Company returned in the new year with their first group number 'Red Eyes' a sinister group piece which looks at the price of love becoming our darkest nightmare.

The dance is a fusion of Spanish and Argentine dance styles including Paso Doble, Ballroom Tango, Argentine Tango and Flamenco. But we are also fusing together more popular styles this time too, including hip hop and street. The deconstruction of the classical styles with modern influences will bring a fresh and darker tone to Limits Dance.

'We're very excited for Red Eyes as not only is it a challenging piece that will fuse together ballroom dance with commercial dance, but it will also see our new company members dance with us as a whole company for the first time. 5 Couples all taking to the stage and dancing as an ensemble, its gonna be a piece to die for' - Liam Gordon

On October 31st, Limits Dance Company previewed their new piece 'Red Eyes' as a FLASH MOB in Edge Hill University.

The FLASH MOBS occurred in Hale Hall, The Performing Arts Building and on top of the Business Building of the university.

We would like to thank for the amazing turn out we had during the performances and all the support we had during the performances. Also a huge thanks to the company for all their hard work and dedication to the piece.

On November 6th in the gorgeous St George's Hall in Liverpool, Limits Dance Company performed 'Red Eyes' publicly for the first time at the Liverpool Dance-a-Thon for The Roy Castle Lung Cancer Foundation Charity Event.

"It was a great event and all the performers did amazingly well so thank you to everyone who supported us and donated money towards the charity!" - Liam Gordon
